RIVERS: Protests erupt after policeman escorting chicken kills taxi driver

Pandemonium struck in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State when a policeman escorting a vehicle conveying frozen chicken and fish shot dead a taxi driver.

The policeman fled the scene of the incident soon after what he had done dawned on him.

Witnesses say the policeman may have been agitated from being frustrated by drivers, especially commercial, who were causing traffic build up as a result of their indiscriminate packing.

Reports say the taxi driver identified only as Bright was by the road side when the policeman suddenly jumped out of the truck, approached his car and shot him in the neck at close range.

A source who witnessed the incident said; “The gunshot scared people and everybody ran away. The driver was killed for no just cause. He was not even the person blocking the road.”

The shooting unavoidably sparked protests among youths in the area who condemned the act by the police officer and were angered that jungle justice had been meted out to one of their own.

The unrest was later quelled by a team of anti-riot policemen who dispersed the restive youths in the area and restored normalcy.

The incident was confirmed by Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, the state Police Public Relations Officer.

The PPRO said; “The policeman is not serving in this state. Efforts are on to identify and fish him out. We want members of the public to be calm; very soon, we will identify and deal with him according to the law.”
