Roberto Carlos faces three months in jail

Prosecutors are asking that Brazilian football legend, Roberto Carlos, face a 3-month jail sentence over delayed child support payments.

His ex-partner, Barbara Thurler, the mother of two of his children, is being owed 61,000 reais (around N8m).

The former Real Madrid left-back, who made over 500 appearances for the club between 1996 and 2007, winning four La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues, claimed financial problems for the delay in payments.

At the court in Rio De Janiero, the 44-year old offered to pay the owed sum in installments, an offer which was rejected by the judge.

Carlos was subsequently handed the prison sentence, though his lawyer claims the matter will be settled without him having to spend time behind bars.

Carlos was a member of the Brazilian team that won the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

He was also in the Brazil U-23 team that lost 4-3 to Nigeria in the semi-finals of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
