Rohr confirms Senegal, Ghana friendlies for Eagles

Having already secured a friendly against Senegal ‘s Teranga Lions on March 23, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has said his team will also play against Ghana in London next month.

These friendlies are ahead of Nigeria’s clash with South Africa in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers and against Cameroon in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers later in the year.

The coach however noted that the friendly ties against the Teranga Lions and the Black Stars are not necessarily for results, but to see the efficacy of the team with the new players that will be invited,

“Senegal, who are one of the strongest countries in Africa, will play us in March and we will play Ghana, who were fourth at the last Nations Cup in Gabon,” Rohr said.

“Senegal will help us play against Cameroon, but the game against Ghana will help us in the game against South Africa. We will use the two games to see some new players in some key positions. We don’t play these games for results. That is not to necessarily win but to see our team and the new players who will be invited.”

But the Ghana game isn’t only important to Nigeria, as Ghana will also use the friendly to prepare for their Afcon qualifier against Ethiopia as well as their World Cup qualifying double header against Congo.

The Super Eagles are considered the underdogs for their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon who won Africa’s flagship competition in Gabon last week. But Coach Rohr remains confident of a victory because of their home advantage and Cameroon will be faced with a fixture congestion following their participation at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

“I’m not afraid of Cameroon because I believe we can beat them in Uyo in August,“ Rohr told the NFF YouTube channel.

“They will be favourite now in the two games because they are African champions and we did not play in Gabon, and don’t forget they will be in Russia for the Confederations Cup.”
