Ronaldo fires Madrid to Champions League semis

Reigning FIFA Best Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, scored a hat-trick as holders Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 4-2 after extra time to reach the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday night.

The Portuguese had just set a record in the first-leg of the tie when he netted his 100th UEFA goals to make history, and now has scored 10 out of 12 Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final goals.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg and thus needing at least two unreplied goals to progress, visitors Bayern Munich opened the scoring when Robert Lewandowski confidently drilled in a penalty early into the second half.

Madrid struggled to find rhythm before Ronaldo headed in Casemiro’s precise cross in the 76th minute.

Bayern responded just 36 seconds later as Sergio Ramos’ own goal forced extra time, which the German side had to play with 10 men after Arturo Vidal was sent off.

Ronaldo fired in Madrid’s second in 104 minutes, and the visitors crumbled. Ronaldo tapped in the third after Marcelo’s marauding run, with Marco Asensio sealing victory by firing into the bottom corner three minutes to end of time.

Cristiano has now scored 100 goals in the Champions League, and 46 career hat-tricks for club and country – 1 (Manchester United), 4 (Portugal) and 41 (Real Madrid).

Madrid will discover their semi-final opponents when the draw is made on Friday.
