Ronaldo makes UEFA club history as Madrid stun Bayern

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in history to score 100 European goals as his brace spurred Real Madrid to come from behind to beat Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.

The visitors were trailing 1-0 going into the interval, but a double from Ronaldo in the second half gave the La Liga giants the advantage heading into the second leg at the Bernabeu.

Arturo Vidal had headed Bayern ahead on 25 minutes before wasting a chance to double their lead when he blasted a penalty over the crossbar. But Ronaldo scored in the 47th and 77th minutes of the game to make the scoreline 2-1.

Real manager Zinedine Zidane called it “a big result”, saying it isn’t an easy task to come to Bayern and win.

“It always comes down to small margins, you have to believe until the end and we did that. “Their keeper was in top form. “A third goal would have been a bonus,” he added.

Ronaldo, who was anonymous in a first half which was controlled by Bayern but dominated after the break to carry his side into a strong position, believes the tie is not yet over.

“We have a great advantage, but the tie is not over yet. Bayern have a strong team and are still alive,” the FIFA Best player said after the game.

The Portugal international in his fourth season at Manchester United bagged his first goal in the Champions League and went on to add a further 14 before joining Madrid in 2009.

Since then, Ronaldo’s scored an astonishing 85 goals for Madrid in European competition across eight seasons and his brace tonight means he’s the first player to reach 100.

However, trailing Ronaldo in the number of European goals are Lionel Messi (97), Raul (76), Filippo Inzaghi (70) and Andriy Shevchenko (67).
