Rousseff’s successor promises ‘new era’

Newly sworn-in Brazilian President, Michel Temer (former vice-president) has promised a ‘new era’ after it was all clear for him to step-up as a new leader few hours after the country’s Senate voted to oust Dilma Rousseff.

“Today we inaugurate a new era of two years and four months” to see out the current presidential mandate, Temer told his ministers at a televised cabinet meeting.

Commenting on the new development, Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman, reporting from the capital, Brasilia, held that Temer now faces a huge task as he now has to carry the weighty problems of his country on his lean shoulders.

“We are talking about a massive $60bn deficit, the worst recession this country has been in, double-digit inflation and millions of people out of work.” Newman said.

Following her sack, Rousseff released a statement saying; “They (Senate) decided to interrupt the mandate of a president who had committed no crime. They have convicted an innocent person and carried out a parliamentary coup”.
