Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has faulted the claim by the Presidency that RUGA settlements, being proposed by the Nigerian Government, is meant to resolve farmer/herder conflicts across the country.

The Presidency had in a statement on Sunday signed by the Senior special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, claimed that the settlements were for animal herders who are not only Fulani.

The statement had added, “The presidency wishes to draw attention to recent unhelpful comments regarding the plan to stop roaming of cattle herders with the attendant clashes with farmers.

“Ruga Settlement’ that seeks to settle migrant pastoral families simply means rural settlement in which animal farmers, not just cattle herders, will be settled in an organized place with provision of necessary and adequate basic amenities such as schools, hospitals, road networks, vetinary clinics, markets and manufacturing entities that will process and add value to meats and animal products.”

But responding via a tweet on his Twitter handle early hour of Monday morning, Fani-Kayode faulted the claim saying, “No it is not (to stop roaming of cattle herders with the attendant clashes with farmers). It is an attempt to establish the total hegemony of the Fulani over our nation, to enslave and conquer the ethnic nationalities and indigenous people of Nigeria and to take away all our land.”

The development comes just as former President Olusegun Obasanjo alleged that there were plots to Islamise and Funalise Nigeria and West Africa in general.
