RUSSIA 2018: Rohr wants to avoid problem of bonuses and allowances

Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has expressed concerns over the usual issues of money that affect performance of African teams in football tournaments.

The Franco-German coach, who has booked the 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket for Nigeria, has categorically stated that as part of his team’s preparation for the global showpiece in Russia, all money issue must be sorted out.

Recall that at the last edition of the tournament in Brazil, the Eagles skipped a training to protest the non-payment of bonus for qualifying, which forced the minister of sports to fly out by private jet to pay them almost $4 million cash.

But Rohr believes the Super Eagles can improve beyond the round of 16 – which is the team’s best ever performance at the World Cup – if the players show high commitment and the football authorities hand all necessary payments to them as at when due.

“If we want to do something at the World Cup, we have to prepare well,” Rohr told reporters.

“We want everybody who wants to be part of the team to show the same solidarity we currently have in the team.

“More importantly, we don’t want the issue of money to be a problem. “The issue of bonuses and allowances, which are the usual African problem we see during the World Cup, must be avoided.

“Such issues will be bad for our preparation. “I have told my officials and the federation president that all (such issues) be cleared before the start of the competition.”

FIFA will pay Nigeria over $10 million for qualifying for Russia 2018, and a total of 37 players, who have been used for the qualifying series so far, are all entitled to a share of a part set aside as qualification bonus.

However, should the team reach the knockout rounds of the tournament as they did in the 1994 and 2014 editions, they will earn more money from the world football governing body.
