Over ten thousand people employed under the Edo Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) who were on Monday sacked by the state government on Tuesday stormed the Government House, blocking off its entrance.

The sack of the workers was made public in a government sponsored announcement signed by the Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), Professor Julius Ihonvbere on Monday June 8th, 2015.

Reacting, the workers who demanded they be recalled, said the announcement of the scrapping of the scheme after six years of engagement by the various ministries came to them as a surprise.

They alleged that government used them to achieve their political goals to prosecute the last general elections only to be dropped after the APC became victorious due to their efforts.

They said on appointment, they were assured of being absorbed by the civil service commission but were shocked at the scrapping of the scheme.

The aggrieved youths threatened to barricade the entrance to the government house until they are reabsorbed into state civil service.

Addressing the protesters, Deputy Chief of Staff Government House, Barrister Ken Ihensenkhen who was initially resisted by the protesters to speak on the issue, promised that the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will look into their grievances.
