Sagay defends Amaechi in bribery allegations, says judges lied against him

Nigerian Constitutional lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), on Thursday described Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi as one of the brightest stars in President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, absolving him of corruption allegations.

According to him, it was powerful opposition political leaders in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states that corrupted the judiciary after the 2015 elections and not Amaechi who was accused by justices Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro of corruption.

The two justices had accused the Transport Minister of attempting to bribe them so that they will rule in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in governorship election case involving Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Ekiti and Abia states at the Supreme Court.

But Sagay, who is the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, in a statement on Thursday described the allegations by the two Supreme Court judges, who are under probe at present, as an after-thought.

“This sudden anti-Amaechi narrative is consistent with the objectives and interests of the chief promoters and funders of judicial corruption during election petitions. These powerful opposition politicians are well known. To be more specific, they are from Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States.

“They are the ones who financed judicial corruptions and brought that great institution, the judiciary, to its knees after the 2015 elections. These allegations are intended to undermine and weaken the Buhari-led Federal Government, by depriving it of the service, input, ideas and productivity of some of its brightest stars.

“This is intended to set the stage for charging the government with ineffectiveness and cluelessness. In other words, it is an attempt to reduce the image and perception of this Federal Government to the low level of their own late and unlamented government,” Sagay stated.

He then advised the judges to use their time to get ready for their trial and stop wasting it in inconsequentialities.

Pro. This is hearsay and not the best evidence rule. Ameche has issues with his own mouth. Since when did he appoint you as his spokesperson. With statements like this, our law graduates will not be respected outside the shores of Nigeria.
