Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has been voted the 2017 BBC African Footballer of the Year.

The Liverpool forward beat Super Eagles and Chelsea forward Victor Moses, Gabon and Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guinea and Leipzig’s Naby Keita and Senegal and Liverpool’s Sadio Mane to the award.

Salah has been in brilliant form for both club and country in the outgoing year, and played a key role in Egypt’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification.

The former AS Roma and Chelsea player, who moved to Liverpool this season, is currently the highest goal scorer in the English Premier League with 13 goals.

Speaking after receiving the award, Salah said: “It’s always a special feeling when you win something. I feel like I had a great year, so I’m very happy.”

He becomes the third Egyptian after Mohamed Barakat in 2005 and Mohamed Aboutrika in 2008 to win the 17-year-old BBC award.
