Mohamed Salah was injured during a thrilling encounter at Newcastle as Liverpool sealed a 3-2 win over their hosts in the Premier League on Saturday.

Salah, who scored his team’s second goal, was involved in an aerial challenge with Newcastle goalie and was replaced by Divock Origi after 73 minutes with the match level at 2-2.

It is yet to be known how long the injury could keep Salah off the pitch and whether he would be fit to play for his country in the coming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted in Egypt.

Origi headed the winner with four minutes remaining to send the Reds to the top of the table pending the outcome of Manchester City’s match on Monday.

Virgil van Dijk scored the opener for Liverpool, while Christian Atsu and Salomon Rondon scored for the hosts.

As it stands, Manchester City must beat Leicester City at Etihad Stadium on Monday to return to the top ahead of the final round of games next Sunday.

Speaking after the match, winning goalscorer Origi said: “Today was a big fight, we knew that beforehand. It wasn’t easy but in the end we showed our fighting spirit and got the three points.

“I just tried to do whatever I can. I’m happy for the team. We work so hard and it’s a crucial part of the season. We just had to fight for the three points.”

On the title race, he added: “It’s a lot of emotion but we have to control it. It’s very exciting, it’s a special season but we want to finish it in style. Hopefully it goes our way.”

Earlier on Saturday, Crystal Palace defeated Cardiff City 3-2 to send the hosts to relegation, while West Ham beat Southampton 3-0 and Wolves saw off Fulham 1-0.

Liverpool will host Barcelona on Tuesday for the reverse fixture of their Champions League semifinal tie, having lost 3-0 at Camp Nou in the first.
