Samsung kicks as SON seals its offices for infractions
Samsung West Africa says it is reaching out to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) over the sealing it office of on Victoria Island, Lagos.
SON while sealing the office on Tuesday, said it was over failure to register some of its goods being marketed in Nigeria.
According to SON Head of Product Registration, Engr. Enebi Onucheyo, the organisation carried out the action in compliance with the provisions of the SON Act 14, of 2015.
The Act, he had explained, provides for every product imported into Nigeria to be registered with SON for traceability and confirmation of quality status.
Representatives of the company claimed ignorance of the need to register the products stating that they do not import nor sell products but only market them.
However, Engr. Onucheyo stated the organisation records showed that many Samsung products in the Nigerian Markets are not registered.
He said that the facility will be reopened once the company takes steps to register all their products as required by law.

Also speaking on the issue, SON Director-General, Osita Abuloma accused Samsung of refusing to register their products with the agency even after several letters and reminders to that effect but rather continued to import products into the country from their parent company in South Korea.
According to him, it is illegal for any company or individual to import products into the country without registering them with SON to ascertain the quality and performance standards before exposing the product to the public .
He said the risk is that since the quality it’s not ascertained, it may expose the public to unimaginable risk.
But reacting, the tech giant, in a statement signed by its management confirmed the development, but added, that; “SON’s action was apparently due to a miscommunication between both parties regarding the registration of products in Nigeria. Samsung is working in collaboration with SON to reach an amicable resolution of the matter.
Samsung, it said, “will not willfully disrespect the laws and regulations in countries where it operates.”
