Samuel Eto'o declares support for new CAF leadership

Ahead of the Presidential election of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Former Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o has aired his support for the emergence of a new leadership at the continent’s football governing body.

Eto’o, whose countryman Issa Hayatou is running for his 8th term as CAF President against the Malagasy Ahmad Ahmad, opined that trying something new at the head of CAF won’t be a bad idea

“No institution resists the laws of cycles and change. I just hope that these changes will help African football to evolve, because it is the most important, ” Eto’o said in an interview with Jeune Afrique.

“Issa Hayatou has done a lot for African football. And I think that he thinks of his own succession, to perpetuate the good work he has killed.

“The development of CAN has improved infrastructure, and that is important.

“CAF is at a certain level of financial income. It is respected, within FIFA for example.

“But we should bring more freshness to open up other horizons. Without denying what has been done. These changes could prolong and improve what has been accomplished.

Eto’o also mentioned that the new leadership at the world governing body, FIFA, is bringing about innovations, and Africa could take a cue from the change.

“Look at FIFA: the arrival of Gianni Infantino in the presidency has reignited innovation. Trying to do something else at the head of CAF is not a bad idea,” he added.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Mr. Amaju Pinnick, among other FA bosses especially in the Council of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA), are openly campaigning against the re-election of Hayatou, who has been in power since 1988, supporting Ahmad Ahmad to become the new president.

The CAF elections is scheduled to hold on March 16 in Ethiopia.
