Saraki ignores senators’ protest to save Buhari’s ambassadorial list from rejection
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, today, prevented a rejection of a list of non-career ambassadorial nominees sent in by President Nuhammadu Buhari.
Senate Leader, Ali Ndume moved a motion that the Senate should consider President Buhari’s request to confirm the nominees.
Saraki put it forward for a voice vote. Lawmakers thundered ‘nay’. This time, the Red Chamber became rowdy. After restoring peace, Saraki put it up again and lawmakers re-echoed the same ‘nay’.
Saraki who paused for about ten seconds, shocked lawmakers when he overruled them and approved the consideration of the list of non-career ambassadorial nominees.
Some lawmakers immediately protested. Those who stood up to express their grievances, were ignored by Saraki who moved ahead to accommodate other issues listed in the Order Paper.
It was however gathered that President Buhari’s refusal to address the lopsided appointments in the career ambassadorial list sent to the Senate in July, necessitated the attempted rejection of the non-career list.

In July, shortly before lawmakers embarked on their annual recess, President Buhari forwarded names of 47 career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation.
The list was greeted with criticisms and outcry from Senators who protested the exclusion of their states from the list. Though the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has concluded the screening exercise, the final report has not been laid on the floor for debate.
In the new list, Imo state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have again been omitted. It is uncertain if the issues raised will be addressed by President Buhari before it will be debated.

And the revised list is still having the loopholes that caused the rejection of the initial one. President Buhari must be a proud man, who thinks the public’s opinion doesn’t matter.

I don’t see anything wrong in what Saraki has done, he has the highest authority in the house and his YES automatically cancels all NOs and vice versa. So, no one should complain.

Saraki is only looking for Buhari’s favour, it’s unwise for to have overruled the house. It would have been better if the house was indecisive about the matter and he made his final verdict.

I don’t see reasons why saraki will turn down his colleagues disapproval , he should not usurp power because he is the Senate president. They are all senators elected by the electorates.
His ambassadorial nominations capture more northern people. Only God will save us from buhari’s partiality.
