Scared? Chevron evacuates staff over community protest

The protest embarked upon by Ugborodo villagers in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, worsened on Wednesday, as the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, has evacuated its workers from the Escravos Tank Farm in the community.

The protest attracted elders, leaders, youths and women of Ugborodo, an Itsekiri community, who had laid siege to the company since Tuesday.

According to a security staff of the company, “An Aero plane just landed like 40 minutes back to continue evacuation of top staff from the tank farm. This is in addition to other staff, earlier evacuated with the choppers. The junior staffers are not going in or out of the company because of the tense situation.”

The villagers, who accused the company of neglect and discrimination, set bonfires and occupied the company’s premises, and refused all entreaties by security agencies to vacate the premises.

They vowed not to vacate the premises until their grievances were addressed by the company
