Security operatives injured, vehicles razed as gunmen attack police checkpoint in Anambra
Gunmen on Thursday attacked a police checkpoint at Ajali, Orumba North local government area of Anambra State, and injured two security operatives.
The spokesman for the state police command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday in Awka.
He said the victims – a police officer and a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group – sustained the injuries during a gun duel with the criminals.
The spokesman added that the two men are receiving treatment in a hospital in the state.
Ikenga revealed that the attackers also set ablaze two vehicles belonging to the vigilante group.
He said: “The gunmen were intercepted on Thursday on the Umuchu- Amesi-Uga Road.
“Recovered from them was one branded blue Hilux vehicle suspected to have been snatched from an unsuspecting member of the public.

“During the search conducted in the vehicle, coolers for food preservation were found. The armed men were trailed after police operatives resisted an attack on a police checkpoint at Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area.
“During the gun duel, one police personnel and one AVG Operative sustained gunshot injuries and are currently responding to treatment in a hospital.
“Unfortunately, the two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG were caught up in fire and razed down completely.”
Anambra like other states in the South-East has witnessed several attacks by criminals masquerading as secessionist agitators in the last three years with policemen killed and properties valued at billions of naira destroyed during the period.
