Selfishness, greed holding Nigeria down; Abdusalami, Kukah ask citizens to ‘rise up’

In readiness of the coming general elections, Nigerian leaders have continued to call on citizens to brace up for the polls and exercise their franchise as a means of enthroning responsible and effective leadership.

The most recent call was made Tuesday by the National Peace Committee (NPC) whose leaders, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (retd) and Convener, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, called on Nigerians to ‘rise up’ and defend democracy.

The position of NPC was contained in a statement entitled: “Nigerians: Rise up and obey the nation’s call.”

The organisation reviewed preparations for the 2019 elections and expressed deep concerns over events leading up to the polls, noting that “very little has happened to assuage the deep feeling of embarrassment, pain, and disappointment across the land.”

The Committee lamented that Nigeria’s growth and development had been bogged down by selfishness and greed and called on God to forgive the country its sins.

“We thank God for the gift of this great country. We know that our selfishness and greed have delayed our march to greatness. We commit our country to you at this very delicate and difficult time. Take control of all the relevant agencies in this election and let your will be done.

“We know that you are a perfect God and that in the end, may your will be done. We commit the future into your hands. Save us from further violence and bloodshed. Forgive our many sins. We believe that your time is the best for us,” the statement noted.
