Sen Melaya arraigned for attempted suicide, escape from custody

The Nigerian Police on Tuesday arraigned the Senator representing Kogi West at the National Assembly before an Abuja Federal High Court on six-count charges bordering on attempted suicide and attempt to escape from custody.

He, however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding Judge, Justice Sylvanus Orji recalled that the defendant was granted bail when arraigned earlier for the same offence on July 25, 2018.

He maintained that the bail conditions which included the sum of N5 million and two sureties in like sum were still valid and should be sustained in the current charges.

The prosecuting counsel, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN) who told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 24 also explained that the defendant allegedly forced his way out of the police vehicle and attempted to escape while being conveyed to Lokoja.

Izinyon said the defendant held a substance in his hand and threatened to drink it to kill himself so that he would put the police officers in trouble.

He said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 148,153,173,231, 326 and 327 of the Penal Code.

The matter was then adjourned until April 5, in the absence of the defence counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).
