Sen Sekibo loses at Appeal Court, told to step aside

The Appeal Court has upheld the judgement of the Rivers State national and state Assembly Election Petition Tribunal which sacked Senator George Sekibo as senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District.

The appellate court on Thursday dismissed the appeal filed by Sekibo, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator stating that it lacks merit and failed to show any reason why the decision of the Tribunal should be set aside.

The three-man panel of judges ruled that Sekibo only presented his closing remarks at the end of the hearing at the tribunal.

They said he did not challenge the decision reached by the tribunal which had stated that Sekibo “became Senator through the back door.”

The three-man panel of the Tribuna had in late June ruled in favour of the petition of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Andrew Uchendu.

The Tribunal declared that Uchendu was the winner of the December 10 rerun election in the Rivers-East Senatorial District and ordered the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) to issue the APC candidate a certificate of return, and withdraw that of Senator Sekibo.
