Senate overrides Buhari on 2 declined bills

The Senate on Tuesday approved a sum of N8.916 trillion as the budget for the 2019 fiscal year as against the N8.83 trillion proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

This is about N86 billion higher than the amount initially submitted to the National Assembly by Buhari in December 2018.

During the Senate’s plenary session headed by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, the new budget figure was passed following a report presented by  Danjuma Goje, chairman senate committee on appropriations.

Goje explained that the increase in the budget was to accommodate provisions for the establishment of the Northeast Development Commission as well as compensation for victims of Zamfara killings.

Saraki on his part, commended the house for meeting the deadline for the passage of the budget, urging the Federal Government to ensure the budget is implemented on time in order to benefit Nigerians.

“I want to thank our colleagues, particularly for their understanding and for us to be able to meet todays deadline in passing the Bill and thank the committee on appropriation too.”

“I hope that with this Budget passed, the Executive will also ensure the full implementation of the Budget for the benefit of Nigerians as a whole,” Saraki said.
