Senate fires back at Osinbajo, says it's position on EFCC boss Magu remains the same

THE Nigerian Senate has said that its position on the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission substantive chairman remains the same.

This was stated by the chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Sabi Abdullahi during an interview with newsmen on Friday in Abuja.

He was responding to the statement credited to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo that as long as the present administration continues in power that Magu will remain the EFCC chairman. The acting president reportedly said this through Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who represented him at an event in Kaduna.

But the Senate spokesman responding on the matter said, “The Senate has already made its resolution, and our resolutions are official statements. And most times, based on how we communicate, we don’t go to press immediately because somebody has made a statement; we usually discuss issues.

“You know before we made that resolution the issue was debated. It is not because the executive has said something, we will react to it. We discuss issues first. That is what makes up an institution. Nobody in the Senate is expressing his individual opinion. We are expressing the opinion of the Senate, its stand and its position.

“We have given it a resolution. For now that is what subsists, and until we get a response, otherwise officially, we are not going back.”

On the need for arms of government to respect the rule of law for the deepening of the democracy in the country Abdullahi said, “Let us work in the interest of Nigerians. We have made a point, a point which is clear. He was brought to us for confirmation, and on the basis of damning reports from the DSS, we rejected him twice. It is left for Nigerians to see and we have done our part.”

The executives cannot keep rubbishing the senate! The red chamber to stick to its words and make sure Magu gets kicked out of office. If the presidency is proving stubborn, the senate should also be stubborn.

When you claim to understand the law more than the interpreters, be ready to be disgraced. The law makers should know the type of acting president they are dealing with, he’s not just a small boy in law.

Having Magu in office is fast becoming illegal, simple protocol and order from the senate, the presidency has failed to follow. This is bullshit!
