APC senators use majority advantage to block motion on Buhari’s Democracy Day speech

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday told Nigerians that he should be henceforth addressed as, ‘Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan Ph.D, CON’.

His media office stated this in an email message made available to newsmen.

The office equally presented an official portrait, which it asked Nigerians, media organisations and other government parastatals to use as his new portrait.

The message read, “The President of the Senate is to be addressed as: Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan Ph.D, CON, as indicated on the portrait.”

Lawan, a member of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged as Senate President on June 11, the day the 9th National Assembly was inaugurated.

He polled 79 votes to beat another APC senator, Mohammed Ali Ndume who got only 28 votes.

Many Nigerians claim and still maintain that he would lead a rubber stamp legislative arm. Not a few were disappointed with the recent Lawan-led Senate screening of ministerial nominees, which was characterised by ‘take a bow and go’ mantra.

Meanwhile, Lawan had constantly maintained that as much as the Senate under him would work harmoniously with the executive arm, he was not going to be a rubber stamp senator.
