The widely talked about anti-social media bill sponsored by Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah (APC, Kebbi South) has been thrown out by the Nigerian Senate.

Seen as a frivolous bill mooted in 2015 (SB. 143) and otherwise known as anti- social media bill, it could be recalled that it set the Senate against the public when it passed through second reading late last year due to its unpopularity.

The decision to throw the bill out was taken following the report of the committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on the bill.

Senator David Umaru (APC, Niger East), the Chairman of the Committee while delivering his report said, “The bill was opposed by almost all stakeholders during the Public Hearing on it. Even Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, also backed the withdrawal. Therefore, he said, his committee recommended its withdrawal.”
