The Nigerian Senate has announced the withdrawal of a suit filed before the Supreme Court challenging the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari last month suspended Onnoghen for reasons that border on his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over false asset declaration.

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, had last Monday approached the apex court requesting the interpretation of the purported order by the code of conduct tribunal that empowered the President to suspend the CJN.

But a statement by the Special Adviser to the former Kwara state governor on Media, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the Senate President had considered the withdrawal of the suit to give way for the intervention of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The statement read, “The Senate has therefore decided to discontinue the case it filed in the Supreme Court. It should be noted that the case has been slated for hearing tomorrow. This decision also affirm the confidence of the Senate in the ability of the NJC to successfully and creditably resolve the issues.”
