9TH ASSEMBLY: Gaya declares intent to run for office of Deputy Senate President

The Senator representing Kano South Senatorial district, Kabir Gaya, insists he is going to contest against Omo-Agege and others for the role of Deputy Senate President in Tuesday’s election of principal officers of the 9th Senate.

Senator Gaya, who noted his intention in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja insisted that, “it does not matter whether he comes from the same zone with President Muhammadu Buhari,” saying that he is entitled to vote and be voted for.

However, Gaya believes that the election would be rancour-free particularly on the mode of elections.

“Whatever method of election tomorrow, I assure you that it will be rancour-free. Open or secret ballot, our leader has been chosen, but for the DSP, I will contest against anybody tomorrow”, Gaya said.

Gaya’s declaration comes after the clamour by the Southeast and former Abia State governor and currently a senator-elect, Orji Uzor Kalu, to have the 9th Senate Deputy President come from the zone suffered a heavy blow.

This is especially as the national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially announced its adoption of Omo-Agege, a Senator from the South-south for the position.

The party also announced Muhammed Idris Wase as its choice for Deputy Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives.

Groups from the Southeast and Kalu had constantly warned the APC not to neglect the zone in Nigeria’s leadership equation.

Kalu, who is contesting for the position of Deputy Senate President, had recently argued that since the national chairman of the APC is from the South-south the party should do the needful and allow the Southeast produce the Deputy Senate President.
