There are palpable fears in Kaduna State ahead of Saturday’s (today’s) All Progressives Congress (APC) state congress over alleged plot by Governor Nasir El-Rufai to “undermine democratic process.”

Raising this alarm, the senator representing Kaduna North senatorial district in the Senate, Suleiman Hunkuyi, called on the security agencies to have the governor, his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Alhaji Uba Sani; Commander of ‘Operation Yaki’, Col. Abubakar Soja (retd.), Acting Secretary of the APC in the state, Alhaji Yahaya Baba-Pate, Samaila Suleiman and Auwal Yaro Maikyau on security watch list.

The senator stated this in a statement he released on Friday in response to an earlier alleged warning to him and 38 other suspended members by the governor’s faction of the party to stay away from the congresses of the party scheduled to hold from May 5.

Before the alleged warning, the faction loyal to the governor had on Monday alerted of plots by the senator to destabilise the party’s congresses across the state.

But in his statement on Friday, Senator Hunkuyi denied the allegation and described the governor and other chieftains of the party he asked to be watched as dangerous for democracy in Kaduna State.

He said, “It is pertinently clear to all that they have perfected plans to undermine the democratic process, which guarantees the right of every member to aspire for any position and for them to have freedom of choice to determine who lead our party at the various levels.”

He also called on security agencies to investigate recent attacks by thugs allegedly armed by the governor with dangerous weapons to assassinate him.

“You may also recall series of attacks on my person and that of my followers, mainly among which are the recent assassination attempts on my life and that of Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan and other people during the stakeholders’ meeting in the Central Senatorial Zone, held at the NUT Endwell Hotel, Kaduna on April 30, 2018, where several persons had various degrees of injury.

“I have been in politics in Kaduna for over 30 years; the recent style of barbarism and hooliganism and arming of young people with guns, daggers and other dangerous weapons to attack perceived political opponents is dangerous and alien to the people of the state,” he said.
