Protests erupt in OAU as school panel blocks legal representation for sex-for-mark victim

The real reason Ms. Monica Osagie, the victim in the sex-for-mark scandal involving Professor Richard Akindele of OAU, resorted to self-help has been revealed in a statement issued by a gender activist Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi.

According to Dr Akiyode-Afolabi, Osagie, “resorted to self help” by setting-up the lecturer through audio recording after two lecturers she approached for intervention disappointed her.

The activist who is the Executive Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre also denied claims that Osagie was invited to appear before a panel set up by OAU to relay her own side of the story.

The activist, in a statement she issued on behalf of Osagie, on Friday, demanded “thorough investigation” into what she called “ sexploitation .”

Dr Akiyode-Afolabi also added that Osagie was willing “to appear before any school panel if and when duly invited.”

She called on the school authorities “not to compromise the reputation of this old and respected university and its responsibility for protecting its students in a bid to cover up the unethical and disgraceful behaviour of individual lecturers.

“Contrary to the information coming from OAU, Ms. Monica Osagie was never invited by the school management to appear before any panel. I ( Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi), have been in contact with Ms. Osagie and has her instructions to inform the management of her willingness to appear before any school panel if and when duly invited,” she added.

The statement is coming days after the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, handed Professor Akindele an indefinite suspension after he was caught on tape requesting for sex from Osagie in exchange for marks.
