Sheriff, Makarfi take fight for control of PDP to Abuja Hqtrs

The national secretariat of Nigeria’s main opposition Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has become a bone of contention between rival factions led by Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi.

Shut in June 2015, the secretariat was flung open Thursday for use of the Sheriff-led faction, apparently in response to the Court of Appeal judgment that returned Sheriff as the authentic chairman of PDP. He was allowed access by the police.

The move, however, only served to heighten the in-fighting within the fractured party.

Reacting Thursday, Makarfi, whose group has served intention to seek the Supreme Court’s intervention in the case, urged the Nigerian Police to bar Sheriff from use of the secretariat until all issues are resolved at the apex court.

Sheriff’s visit to the headquarters on Thursday lasted about 15 minutes during which he reiterated his group’s determination to unite the party,

Said he, ”We came to see what renovation and cleaning to be done. While that is going on, we will continue with our consultation. We will do everything humanly possible to ensure that nobody is victimised for holding different opinions.

“It is not enough for some people to sit in Abuja here and say they want to choose party leaders for the people in the village”.

Sheriff was accompanied by some members of his National Working Committee (NWC), among who, were Senator Buruji Kashamu, Deputy National Chairman Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, National Secretary Prof. Wale Oladipo and National Auditor Adewole Adeyanju.

Markafi’s camp continues to accuse the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), of instigating the crisis within PDP, citing the administration’s alleged clandestine interactions with Sheriff. The claims have been denied by the Federal Government.
