PDP crisis deepens as court orders INEC to recognise only Sheriff's candidates

A federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday may have effectively put paid to the claims of Sen Ali Modu Sheriff to the chairmanship of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The court presided over by Justice Valentine Ashi annulled the party’s 2014 Constitution Amendment that made it possible for Sheriff to come in as the party’s national chairman.

The party has been enboiled in crisis over who is the authentic national chairman of the party, as Sheriff was dropped at the recent Port Harcourt convention of the party, but he has refused to leave, claiming that he has a court order effectively placing him as the chairman.

The party convention had appointed Sen Ahmed Makarfi as chairman of its caretaker committee to pilot the activities of the party, and works toward another national convention in which the party would elect its national executives.

The leadership tussle has also extended to Edo state, causing confusion as the party prepares for the September 10 governorship election in the state, as Sheriff said the initial primary that produced Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu was illegal.

He went ahead to constitute another convention committee headed by Sen Hope Uzodinma to conduct another primary.

Sheriff has been severally accused of working for the opposition APC to create crisis in the party and reduce PDP’s chances in the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo state.
