Shiites resume protest, shut federal secretariat

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) mostly known as Shiites on Monday embarked on a protest on the streets of Abuja.

The movement which is protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, had earlier embarked on such protests which had turned violent.

After a pause in their protests, they again stormed the streets of Abuja, grounding activities at the Federal Secretariat complex, Abuja, as they took over the roads in the area.

Their earlier protests had centered around the National Assembly complex, which is not too far from the present area they are occupying in protest.

They also reportedly injured the Federal Secretariat Divisional Police Crime officer in the face after he asked them to stop harassing motorists.

They chanted “Free El-Zakyzaky,” and dared a team of policemen who later arrived the scene to dislodge them.
