Showdown: 19 exiled lawmakers storm Ekiti, hold session
The stage seems to be set for a showdown in Ekiti state as the 19 members of the state House of Assembly who had fled the state in the heat of political chaos returned on Wednesday, heading straight to the hallowed chambers for a parliamentary session.
Their action caused tension in the state capital, and the state’s commissioner of police, Taiwo Lakanu, had to order the closure of the Assembly premises to prevent breakdown of law and order, bringing in his men to enforce the order.
It will be recalled that the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Adewale Omirin was banished alongside 18 members of the APC by seven lawmakers loyal to Governor Ayodele Fayose last year.
Omirin was thereafter impeached by the seven lawmakers on November 17, 2014 who elected a new speaker, Hon Dele Olugbemi, who had since been presiding over the affairs of the Assembly.
A few of the returnee lawmakers who were present Wednesday were: the Speaker, Hon Omirin, Deputy Speaker, Hon Tunji Orisalade, Hon Wunmi Ogunlola and Hon Ade Ajayi, Hon Gbenga Odebunmi among others.
