SIERRA LEONE: President poll winner Bio fast-racks oath taking

Hours after narrowly edging ruling APC candidate Samura Kamara to emerge winner of the presidential run-off in Sierra Leone, opposition candidate Julius Maada Bio has moved to fast-track his presidential oath.

Reports say Bio, a former military ruler who briefly ruled the country in 1996 rushed to take his presidential oath in a hotel after winning the run-off election.

Speaking after taking his oath at the hotel, Bio said; “This is the dawn of a new era,” he said. “The people of this great nation have voted to take a new direction.”

He narrowly beat Kamara, who has alleged irregularities and says he will challenge the outcome of the election result in court.

The recently staged presidential run-off was initially delayed for several days due to a complaint of fraud lodged by a member of the APC.

The case that led to the injunction was filed by one Ibrahim Sorie Koroma, a lawyer linked to the ruling party All People’s Congress (APC). Lawyer Koroma in his filing averred that electoral fraud allegations should be investigated before the vote goes ahead.
