Smugglers kill customs officer, injure another in Lagos community

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) lost one of its men, Yakubu Shuaibu, to smugglers in an ambush at Akinrun village in Oja-Oda area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly happened after Customs officials had seized contraband goods from some of the smugglers in the area.

The slayed officer was attached to the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A in Lagos.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the FOU spokesman, Jerry Attah said the smugglers laid an ambush for the operatives while they were returning to base and shot at them.

The development led to the death of Shuaibu, an Assistant Superintendent of Customs and left another officer identified as Joseph S. injured.

Attah, said the deceased had been laid to rest according to Islamic injunction in Abeokuta.

“They were on a patrol; they had made seizure of smuggled rice. While taking the rice to their base, they were ambushed. The officer was shot on Sunday, but he died today. He has been buried according to Islamic rites.
