Social media blocked in Congo to thwart anti-Kabila protests

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have ordered telecom companies in the country to suspend internet services in a bid to thwart protests against President Joseph Kabila.

Protests in the DRC have been brewing following underground efforts by Kabila to prolong his stay in office, with reports suggesting that mobile companies like Airtel, Vodacom and Orange have all signed an agreement to carry out government directive.

The country’s top court has extended Kabila’s stay beyond the end of his two-term limits in a deal with opposition leaders to delay a vote in November to choose a successor until April 2018 sparking public outcry leading to protests.
