SocialMediaTrends: What Nigerians are saying about teacher who assaulted 3-yr-old

Nigerians have been united in condemning a Lagos teacher, Stella Nwadigbo after she was caught in a video assaulting a 3-year-old boy, Abayomi Michael, during a numeracy lesson at a private school, Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu.

The 45-year-old teacher was captured in the video which went viral on Wednesday, repeatedly slapping the toddler after he failed to get a particular figure right during the lesson, an act which led to public outrage with many Nigerians on social media.

While many called for her arrest and immediate prosecution, others called for the school to be closed down indefinitely.

As a result of the public outcry, the Lagos State government swung into action by arresting Nwadigbo through the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.

Executive Secretary of the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, who confirmed the teacher’s arrest, said she would be prosecuted while an investigation into the school has commenced.

The police also released a statement on the issue, confirming the arrest of the teacher.

Force Police spokesman, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released late Wednesday said:

“Child Abuse: One Stella Nwadigbo, aged 45, the teacher who physically abused the 3-year-old Abayomi Micheal of Christ-Mitots School in Ikorodu, has been arrested by the police. She was arrested today, Tuesday 8th Jan, 2025, immediately after the criminal act. Justice must be served. Thanks
Muyiwa Adejobi, Force PRO.” – @PoliceNG

The school management also took immediate action by announcing the suspension of Nwadigbo following widespread outrage over the incident.

“The video circulating on social media reveals conduct that is entirely unacceptable and inconsistent with our school’s values,” a statement by the school read.

“We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for our students, and such behavior will not be tolerated.

“We have taken immediate action by suspending the teacher involved while a thorough investigation is conducted. This reflects our zero-tolerance approach to any form of misconduct, especially actions that compromise the safety and well-being of our students.

“To the family of the affected pupil, we extend our sincerest apologies and have reached out to ensure their concerns are addressed,” the statement added.

On Thursday, the police also announced that Nwadigbo has been arraigned at the Ogba Magistrate Court.

“The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Stella Nwadigbo, aged 45, for indecent treatment and assault of a child.

The suspect, who was arraigned in Magistrate Court 1, Ogba today, January 9, 2025, had been remanded in a custodial center,” Adejobi said.

But all the swift measures by the state government, the police and the school authority did not deter Netizens from baring their minds on what they think of Nwadigbo and her act of cruelty towards a mere toddler.

“Just see what a teacher in Christ-Mitots School in Ikorodu, named Stella Nwadigo was videoed mistreating and physically abus!ng a 3-year-old boy, Abayomi Micheal.
And someone even called the woman beating this boy, and she had to lie that tue boy is her son. Thank God LASG took action and had her arrested.” – @Onsogbu

“Child abuse and molestation are not things to be taken lightly since this might cause negative effects on the child. Arresting the teacher isn’t necessarily wrong; instead of just throwing her in jail, proper orientation and education on the issue might be more effective and reasonable.

“But what is shocking is how swift the arrest was. If that speed were to be applied to attending to the problems affecting Nigerians, then the country would have been much better than it is presently. It’s really frustrating to see that one can easily arrest a teacher for abuse. Meanwhile, those in positions of influence and power do much more damage with absolutely no consequences.” – @KloutBox

“Those Imams who physically and mentally abused children in their Islamic classes are here shouting Stella Nwadigo must not go unpunished. All of you abusers should be treated equally.” – @omenwa1124

“The trauma children go through in the hands of teachers ehn. Na why some of them no dey sabi book.” – @Survivalfarms

“Mrs. Stella Nwadigbo, the teacher involved in the assa@ult of 3-year-old Abayomi Michael, has been arr@sted. Many of them hardly go through the appropriate training required to become impactful teachers. She obviously missed the techniques of age-appropriate teaching methods.” – @MettaOba

“The police should have led her out in handcuffs so those children will see her at that low point. What a shame!” – @Nuris01

“They need to check her house if she has a maid or she’s a guardian to a minor . The abuse didn’t just start today , wicked woman.” – @sisiolojuede

“Teaching isn’t for everyone. That woman called Stella Nwadigo. I swear if I am the parent of that little boy, she will end up in jail.” – @_chiefagbabiaka

“I almost cried watching the video. Like, how do you hit a child this hard several times. If you’re not patient, why become a children’s teacher?” – @betacuntri

“The school should be fined 10Million naira and given to the family of the boy. The school surely knows about the ill treatment children get. The sad part is that she herself can not do that much when she was the boy’s age.” – @GaniyuRuquayah

“She has no business being a teacher. I had lots of strict teachers growing up but none of them will strike a child this way.” – @ogunwolw

“I watched the video, and her actions are absolutely condemnable. She acted with cruelty, and her behavior could cause PTSD in the child. While it’s commendable that the police are proactive in this matter, it seems to be for two key reasons:
1.The woman’s ethnic background.
2.The need to serve justice.

However, where is the police PRO in addressing the countless atrocities committed daily in Nigeria? She’s a scapegoat.” – @U_Rochas
