SOMALIA: Islamist attackers gun down 19 civilians at Mogadishu hotel

A car bomb and gun attack by Islamist militants on a busy hotel in the Somali capital of Mogadishu has witnessed the death of no less than 19 people, reports say.

The attackers reportedly rammed their vehicle into the Posh Hotel in south Mogadishu before taking no less than 20 people hostage and killing 19 others who resisted their orders.

According to a police constable Abdi Bashir, the Somali security forces took control of the restaurant at midnight after the gunmen held hostages inside for several hours. Five of the gunmen were killed, he said.

“We are in control of the hotel but it was mostly destroyed by the suicide bomber,” Bashir told Reuters by phone.

The bloody attack has been claimed by Al Shabaab, an Islamist militant group terrorising East Africa.
