SON gives fake tyre dealers 24hrs ultimatum

Published

The Acting Director General of Standard Organisation of Nigeria, (SON) Dr. Paul Angya has called on fake dealers of tyre to close shop or face the wrath of the law.

Angya gave this charge at the Arrive Alive Campaign initiatives of SON in Lagos.

Tagged ‘Ensuring safety of our road through quality tyres’, the event brought together security agencies, Federal Road Safety Corp representatives, tyre dealers and civil society groups, among others.

While noting that the increasing spate of road crashes is astronomically high and influx of fake tyres contribute greatly to this menace, he said it has become inevitable for SON to issue a 24hour order for those involved in the nefarious activities to close shop or face the wrath of the law.

“Our team will be going out to clamp down on fake dealers of tryes and if anyone is found wanting would be liable to imprisonments and huge sum of money will be paid as fine.”

He lamented that many of these dealers often give bribe to government officers to continue in their nefarious acts, but their doom day has come and fake dealers will not go unpunished.

He asserted that China have become a major threat to the fight against fake tryes in Nigeria because they have continued to import substandard tyres to Nigeria even after we have given them a lot of warning.

“We have engaged China on the need to stop import of substandard tyres to Nigeria. We have visited their country and
have seen that the quality of tyre produced for the United State and European market is far higher than the one imported to Nigeria which is not acceptable,” he said.

He added that SON had issued a memorandum of understanding with China to stop the import of substandard tyres to Nigeria and that they will be held liable for any problem that may arise due to their nefarious activities but they have refused to sign it.
