My son’s ailment has put my career on a halt for over a decade —Stella Monye

The travails of veteran Nigerian musician Stella Monye whose only son, Ibrahim, is in dire need of corrective surgery to his damaged urethra is well documented but the mother of two has revealed that her son’s situation has impacted on her career in the last 10-years.

Speaking in an interview with PUNCH, the Afrocentric musician and acclaimed Samba Queen, who has been having sleepless nights over how to raise a whopping $50,000 (N20 million) for her son’s life-saving surgery abroad says she is relying on God to raise the said sum for his treatment.

“That ugly incident has had a huge impact on my career. This has been on for over a decade and most of the times, I have been in one hospital or the other, while also carrying out research on where he can get good care anywhere in the world. The bill, right now, has become enormous and I am praying seriously. Even after this call with you, I am going for a vigil and I will be there for a week to pray for help to raise the funds.

“The matter is complicated and they need to do a comprehensive surgery for him to get his life back. The estimate for his treatment has gone up to $120,000. The bill I was given three years ago has increased exponentially. I have gotten estimates from three different hospitals in US, Russia, Germany, and the cheapest is $100,000.

“The father of the boy died many years ago, even before the accident happened; so, I am the only one that has been bearing the burden. It’s always difficult to fall back on relatives because they also have their own issues too. The only person you can rely on is Jesus Christ,” she added.

Stella’s son, now 27, was 10 years when he fell on a sharp object that pierced deep into his scrotum and an initial surgery created more problems which led to other complications including kidney disease.

He has been operated upon many times because the surgery collapses frequently with his mother constantly going through the excruciating burden of an enduring treatment for her son, and raising money for his treatment.
