South African court jails 2 white farmers for black teen’s murder

A South African court sentenced two white farmers to jail over the murder of a black teenager they suspected of stealing sunflowers in a remote farming community.

Pieter Doorewaard, 28, and Philip Schutte, 35, were found guilty of murdering 15-year-old Matlhomola Mosweu in April 2017 after claiming they caught him taking a plant from a farm in the area.

Doorewaard was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison on Wednesday while Schutte was sentenced to 23 years.

Mosweu who suffered a broken neck died after he was thrown out of a moving vehicle driven by the men but they claimed the teen jumped off the truck as they drove him to the police.

Meanwhile, in 2016, two white farmers in eastern Mpumalanga province forced a black man they accused of intruding into a coffin.

The case flickered outrage after a video of the incident appeared on social media after which the men were sentenced to sixteen and nineteen years in prison respectively.
