ANC gives Zuma 2 days to resign

More pressure is being heaped on President Jacob Zuma after Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa called on prosecutors to hasten action in pursuit of a firm owned by friends of the scandal-plagued leader.

The call by Ramaphosa is coming as authorities in South Africa launched an offensive against companies controlled by the Gupta family, businessmen friends of Zuma who are accused of unduly using political connections to win work with the state.

“We want to deal with the rot. It is unacceptable, totally unacceptable, that companies owned by the nation and set up to benefit the people have been hijacked,” Ramaphosa said at a meeting of business leaders and cabinet ministers.

Ramaphosa’s call is coming two weeks after parliament also said that it is reviewing rules relating to Zuma’s removal from office.

South Africa’s parliament is making the move after the constitutional court ruled on Dec. 29 that lawmakers had previously failed to hold Zuma to account.

Last month, the court held that the parliament must now set out rules for impeachment proceedings against Zuma over a case of graft.
