South East finally gets post, as Lawan names Senate principal officers

The list of the eight principal officers of the 9th Senate for both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the minority Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been announced.

The list was announced by the Senate President Ahmed Lawan on Tuesday following letters from the national chairmen of the two political parties, Adams Oshiomhole and Prince Uche Secondus respectively.

The APC, in its nomination, finally named a senator from South East, Orji Uzor Kalu, as the Chief Whip of the 9th National Assembly.

Many people from the South East had frowned at the failure of the ruling APC to allow a lawmaker from South East become either the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, House of Representatives Speaker or Deputy Reps Speaker.

Any hope the zone may get the position of the Senate leader, was dashed as Lawan, in the names of the principal officers sent to him by the APC, named Senator Abdullahi Abubakar Yahaya from Kebbi State, as new Senate Leader, and Ajayi Borofice from Ondo State, as Deputy Senate Leader.

Lawan after naming former Abia State governor Kalu, as the new Senate Chief Whip, said Senator Abdullahi Aliyu Sabi from Niger State will function as the Deputy Chief Whip.

On the side of the opposition, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe also from Abia State is the new Senate Minority Leader, and Senator Emmanuel Bwacha from Taraba is the Deputy Minority Leader.

The Minority Whip of the Senate is Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda (FCT) while Senator Sahabi Ya’u is the Deputy Minority Whip.

Recall that Kalu, the new Chief Whip, who had aspired to become the Deputy Senate President, recently said that South East deserved not to be giving any vital leadership position, because they voted against President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC in the last general elections.
