Sowore’s dream to replace Buhari as president back on track

The aspiration of the publisher of SaharaReporters to vie for the office of Nigeria’s President seems to be back on track.

The dream had hit a hitch when his move to raise $2 million through GoFundMe was banned.

However, Sowore’s aspirations to become Nigeria’s next president received fresh boost as GoFundMe has lifted all bans on his “Take Back Nigeria Movement” fundraising appeal.

Sowore had in an appeal on Tuesday, sought for up to $2 million through the crowdfunding channel to enable him pursue his 2019 bid to become Nigeria’s president.

However, after the account was said to have started recording a deluge of donations, the management of GoFundMe on Wednesday, suspended the account without giving any reason for the action.

Sowore was reported to have written a letter of complaint to the executives of the fundraising platform, where he asked them to examine his public record, saying he was a well known social action organiser and media practitioner.

Subsequently, the account was restored on Thursday.

Sowore, who made this known to Premium Times, explained that GoFundMe gave him no reasons for suspending the fundraising drive.

He however suspects that his political detractors were miffed by the success of the fundraising soon after it was launched and may have been responsible for it being initially flagged.

A senior official of GoFundMe, was said to have only advised Sowore to edit the page for clarity, give direct details for appealing for the $2 million, who would be eligible to withdraw from the fund and how such withdrawal would be delivered.

Mr. Sowore, is one of the young Nigerians who have declared interest for the seat of Nigerian President, currently occupied by 75-year old Muhammadu Buhari, in 2019.
