Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has hit back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for describing him (Soyinka) as apolitical illiterate, who is only good at hunting and wine tasting.
Prof. Soyinka while speaking at a forum in Lagos on Friday tagged ‘An evening with Wole Soyinka’, organised by Globacom, described the former president as a ‘shameless liar’ whose opinion is not respected by anybody.
The event was to celebrate Soyinka’s literary feat and the launch of Glo Literary Prize for Undergraduate Students.
Soyinka, while was responding to a question asking him to respond to the view represented of him by Obasanjo in his memoir, “My Watch” also borrowed the language of Oyetunde Aboyade to describe Obasanjo as an “Economic Illiterate”.

Soyinka explained that he was hardly bothered by Obasanjo’s opinion, however stated that “Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion. But the question is: ‘Who respects the opinion of a liar?’
He continued, “I can spend the whole night proving that he is a liar. Obasanjo was once described by an economist, the late Prof Ojetunji Aboyade, as an economic illiterate. They nearly ‘went into blow’ that night. It was Prof. Mabogunje who separated them.
“So, if an economic illiterate calls somebody a political illiterate, no problem at all.
“In ‘ My Watch’, Obasanjo told the first lie when he said he deplored lies. Anybody who said he never plotted to have an unconstitutional third term in office, even as a writer, I need a word to describe him.”
