Spain’s PM forced out of office after no-confidence vote

The Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy has been unfortunately booted out of office after a no-confidence vote which was sparked by fury over his party’s corruption woes.

Rajoy resigned after an absolute majority of 180 legislators voted for the motion on Friday, making him the first prime minister to be removed in a no-confidence vote since Spain transitioned to democracy in 1977.

Speaking after his ouster, Rajoy who appeared to have accepted his fate after the vote said he was happy to have serve Spain as a Prime Minister.

“It has been an honour to be the prime minister of Spain,” he said.

“It has been an honour to leave behind a better Spain than the one that I found when I took over government.

“I wish my substitute will be able to say the same,” Rajoy said.

The move now paves the way for a takeover by opposition Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez who will now resume as the new Prime Minister of Spain.
