Spanish court orders Catalan separatist leader to remain in detention

Catalan separatist leader Oriol Junqueras will remain in jail according to a ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court for his role following a unilateral declaration of independence in the Catalan parliament on October 27, 2017.

According to a written ruling shared by the court, the judges said there was a risk that Junqueras would again commit an offence if he was released as there was no evidence to show he had abandoned “the path followed so far”
The court ruling on the Catalan separatist leader who remains in custody after over two months in prison would prevent him from swearing in at the opening session of the new Catalan parliament on Jan. 17.

Last month, the arrest warrant for ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and five other members of the Catalonia government was withdrawn by a court in Spain, reports say.

After taking the decision, the Spanish court also noted that the withdrawal of the arrest warrant also prevented more than one European jurisdiction overseeing the case.

The Catalonia leader and five of his ex-ministers all travelled to Belgium following a unilateral declaration of independence in the Catalan parliament on Oct. 27, considered illegal by Spanish courts.

A warrant for arrest was issued by a Spanish judge after Puigdemont and his ministers failed to appear before a high court to answer for rebellion and sedition charges.
