Spectrum trading: Operators to forfeit 60% net proceeds to govt

Telecoms operators willing to sell their spectrum licences to a third party will lose 60 per cent of the proceeds made from such sales to the telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), New Telegraph has reliably gathered.

This is one of the decisions that a telecom company holding a spectrum licence that is not active and is willing to sell it will have to contend with as the new spectrum trading regime begins soon in Nigeria.

However, this applies only to trading of spectrum acquired through administrative process, according to the daft policy accessed by New Telegraph. Under Section 7 of the draft policy regarding fees, NCC said: “Applicants that have been granted approval to trade in spectrum will be required to pay a number of fees as may be applicable.

One of it is administrative fee of one per cent of the gross proceeds. Also, “for trading of spectrum acquired through administrative process, the seller shall, in addition, pay to the Commission 60 per cent of the net proceeds of the transaction.
