SRI LANKA: Authorities race to rescue flood victims as death toll rises to 164

The death toll arising from floods and mudslides which damaged nearly 2,000 houses and killed many in Sri Lanka has risen from 151 to 164 according to local rescuers who thronged the scene of the incident.

The army deployed a dozen aircrafts for the evacuation effort and to carry food and other essentials to affected areas even as it said it does not expect to find any more survivors.

“With bad weather set to continue, there are concerns that the situation will worsen,” said a spokesman with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), adding that according to the government, at least 470,000 people are affected.

The government of Sri Lanka is also now appealing for aid and other items like bottled water, new clothes and dry rations for over half a million people displaced by the island’s worst flooding in more than a decade.
