Manchester City got off to a flying start in the new Premier League season as they began their title defense with a convincing victory at West Ham.

England forward, Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 victory that saw the video assistant referee play a significant role for the first time in the Premier League.

The Champions were 1-0 up at halftime courtesy of a goal by Gabriel Jesus in the 25th minute, before Sterling scored his first of the day in the 51st minute.

The Brazilian thought he had added a third for City midway through the second half when VAR review showed Raheem Sterling was fractionally offside in the build-up.

Sterling added City’s third.

VAR then awarded the visitors a penalty retake after Sergio Aguero’s effort was saved by Lukas Fabianski but Declan Rice was deemed to have encroached into the area.

The Argentina striker made no mistake at the second attempt and made it 4-0, before Sterling completed his hat-trick in added time.

The Pep Guardiola side have shown their quality once again, and their readiness to fight again for the title they won by one point last season.
