Suarez scores for Uruguay

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez and PSG forward Edinson Cavani both scored for their country Uruguay in a final Group A match against Russia at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup at the Samara Stadium on Monday.

Uruguay defeated the hosts 3-0 to emerge winners of the group, although both teams already sealed their place in the knockout round of the tournament.

Suarez opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he placed his 20-yard free-kick into the bottom-right corner of the net.

The South Americans doubled their lead when a corner was half-cleared to Diego Laxalt, who hits an effort from 25 yards. The great shot took a huge deflection off Denis Cheryshev and squeezes into the corner of the net.

Russia, trying to get back into the game, were reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute after Igor Smolnikov got a second yellow for foul.

And after a contested second-half, Cavani netted the third for Uruguay in the 90th minute, to seal their place at the summit of the group.

As table toppers, they will face the runners-up of the Group B in the round of 16.
